My Creative Mission

My name is Austin Williams. I graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 2021 with a degree in Writing, and have been honing my craft since. I write character-driven first-person dramatic narratives, and I like experimenting with style and exploring different mediums. My formula for writing is to start with the protagonist and expand outward to build the world and story around them. This methodology helps me ensure that my characters get developed with satisfying arcs and deep personal relationships. In my mind, a story is first and foremost a vehicle for its characters.

My current project is an original audio drama, Alone Underground, which I’m producing in coordination with the Salem Community Theater in Salem, Illinois. Alone Underground follows the story of Julia Morgan, the last remaining member of a community that survived in an underground shelter following a nuclear apocalypse. When Julia receives the signal from outside that it’s safe to leave the shelter, she is reluctant to do so. She’s lived her whole life underground, and the surface is a great unknown she isn’t sure she can face. Worse, Julia has begun hearing voices—the voices of loved ones now gone, twisted to draw out Julia’s insecurities. Julia will have to confront the history of the shelter, her own history, and come to terms with it before she can move forward and face the world outside.

Alone Underground is fully recorded and currently being edited. Once finished, it will air on local radio and be made available for free online.

My first novel, Angel’s Bargain, is fully written and currently seeking a publisher. This novel tells the story of HUMAI, the first human augmented by advanced neural implants, and the people around her.
